A LITTLE ABOUT US

Before we go any further, we would like to take a moment here and introduce ourselves. We are co-owners of an in-home therapy company that specializes in Autism and Asperger’s. Kelli Waganer is a speech language pathologist and Tara Warwick is an occupational therapist. We work day-in and day-out with children with Autism and Asperger’s. We also facilitate and participate in various training programs and seminars related to Autism and Asperger’s throughout the country. This is our life and our passion.

Because of our experience, we know that everyday life is hard when you have a child or children with Autism or Asperger Syndrome. That’s actually putting it too lightly. It is beyond hard. There may not be a word in the English dictionary that can adequately paint a picture of the difficulty parents and caregivers face day-in and day-out managing households, running errands and earning a living while also caring for a child with Autism or Asperger Syndrome.

Parents of typical children have no idea what you face. The day you found out that your child had Autism, your life changed forever. It’s now a constant uphill struggle in which many people face heartache, financial stress, marital problems, concerns about their children’s future, drastic changes to their social lives and a general feeling of no balance in their lives.

Everyday, we help families work through these problems to regain a sense of balance and learn how to manage their child’s programs. We do this by working hands-on with the children and their families in their own environment.

One disappointment we face in our regular jobs is that we only get to work with a small number of families affected by Autism and Asperger Syndrome.

In an attempt to help even more people achieve positive results, we decided to create My Autism Network. The goal of this one-of-a-kind membership is to give parents a place to ask questions, get help and interact with Autism experts and other families in similar situations. Click here to join now!

“NO PARENT CHOOSES AUTISM…IT CHOOSES YOU!”

Your life’s current road may not be the one you imagined, but it is the road you are on. Instead of letting Autism or Asperger Syndrome take over your life, we want to help you take charge and regain control of your family, your life, plus your child’s treatments and therapies.

Our goal is to give you a place to ask questions and get help plus we want to teach you the skills, strategies and techniques that can help keep your family together while also teaching your child important life skills. We want to help you build and manage your own network of experts, medical professionals and educators who can help your child achieve results in his or her own community.

As a member of My Autism Network you will receive real-world, valuable content each month which we will deliver in the form of downloadable reports, website articles, research briefs, audio and video trainings, support examples, downloadable templates and much more. You will be able to use this information to improve your child’s quality of life by helping him or her learn important life and socialization skills.

In addition, you will become part of our Expert Forum where you can interact with Autism experts, medical professionals and other parents in similar situations as you. This is the true power of our membership. You will have access to your own online Autism Network where you can get help from experts, get support from fellow parents and socialize with new friends. This is your online Autism Network. You will not find another resource like this on the planet today…

“THERE ARE NO VACATIONS FROM AUTISM”

  • Raising a child with Autism or Asperger Syndrome can feel like life is in slow motion. You do not get any breaks and it may seem like everyday you face the same challenges:
  • The tantrums, meltdowns and screaming fits your child throws at home, at the grocery store, at a restaurant, at the doctor’s office and just about everywhere else you go.
  • The stares, eye-rolls and unsolicited comments or suggestions you and your family must endure from other people who judge your ability to control your child or think you must be abusive since he or she is acting out so much.
  • The overall stress of managing and making decisions regarding treatments, therapy sessions, doctors’ appointments, school trips, support groups and other things related to Autism or Asperger Syndrome.
  • The guilt you feel about the sacrifices your other children, your spouse or other loved ones must endure because so much of your time and energy are focused on Autism or Asperger Syndrome.
  • The financial burden placed on you and your family to provide the best quality treatments and therapies for your child.
  • The constant fear that you face day-in and day-out that your child is going to get away from you and run out into the street or wander away and get lost.
  • The fear of answering the telephone when your child is at school or daycare because you think it could be the principal or teacher calling to tell you your child has to go home again due to an outburst, tantrum or worse.
  • The gut wrenching pain that you feel each day because you do not know what to do to help your child, how to teach your child and your concerns about your child’s future well being.
  • The complete exhaustion and fatigue you face each and every day by caring for and managing your family.

In our professional jobs as a speech therapist and an occupational therapist, it seems like just about every new parent we meet can associate with most, if not all, of the situations listed above. Most parents enter the world of Autism the same way.

It all starts in a doctor’s office. Your doctor or another healthcare professional tells you that your child has been diagnosed with Autism or Asperger Syndrome. You are given a few brochures about it and maybe given some ideas of what to do next.

Over the next few months and years after a child has been diagnosed with Autism, many parents will seek help and guidance from their family doctor, other doctors (specialists), therapists, school counselors, teachers, administrators, support group leaders, other parents, family members and more. This often leads to a feeling of confusion, loss of control and depression.

When we meet parents in this situation, we always start by telling them…

“YOU ARE THE EXPERT IN YOUR CHILD’S LIFE”

It is important for you to understand this fact. No matter a person’s qualifications, whether he or she is a medical expert, an educational expert or an Autism expert, this does not mean that he or she is an expert on your child.

No one knows your child like you do. You are the expert in your child’s life and you must become the leader of your child’s Autism network.

At My Autism Network we will work with you through our forums to help you gain control of your child’s programs, treatments, education and therapies.

We certainly do not intend to imply that experienced medical and educational professionals cannot provide your family with wonderful guidance and assistance in programming. They most definitely do and should play a vital role in your child’s Autism Network.

Ultimately though, it is you that will have the final say in determining the right road for your child and for your family.
