Boy with Autism Rescued with Father

The newspapers are plastered with the photos and stories of a father and son who were miraculously rescued from a harrowing experience.

Father and son were in the water in Florida when Chris Marino, age 12, got pulled out into choppy waters by strong currents. When his father Walter realized what had happened, he dove into the water and tried to get to Chris.

Walter reached Chris, but the water was so rough that it was impossible for them to swim back to shore, so they clung to each other for hours. The hours continued until it got dark and somehow the father and son were separated.

Using Obsessions to Teach

It is not uncommon for children with ASDs to develop obsessions over just about any subject imaginable. It may be an obsession over SpongeBob Squarepants or it may be memorizing random facts like capitol cities and species of whales. The list is really endless.
