Montessori Education Overview

Education and learning are often huge barriers for a child who has autism. There are many reasons for this, but one of the major reasons is that in a traditional school classroom setting the basic rule of thumb is for kids to sit down sit still and be quiet.

This is a tall order for all kids – whether they have autism or not. For a child with autism, it can be excruciating, if not impossible. On the other hand, Montessori classrooms work on the opposite premise.

Car Riding Safety Exercise

I have worked with many children who have difficulty with car safety. They do not like to be strapped down in the car and do not understand the importance of wearing a seat belt. I developed this social story to help a child understand the importance of wearing a seat belt when in the car.

Hyperbaric Chambers and Autism

There is quite a deal of attention about autism lately. Researchers are gathering more information for a variety of treatments. Not all treatment works on all individuals, so having some choices is quite a positive situation.Some treatments, such as chelation, are not without critics, though many doctors, medical professionals and parents feel that this therapy has immensely helped their children who have autism.

Another treatment for autism that has been on the horizon for a while is the hyperbaric chamber. This is treatment involving an oxygen chamber where an individual receives pure oxygen or more oxygen than normally breathed. One Dad Takes Initiative

Karl Smith is an engineer who has worked for companies such as AT&T, NCR and the United Nations, among others. He is also a father and his son happens to have autism. These two worlds intersected for Karl who used is extensive background as a software developer to create a way to help his son.

The result became Accelerations Educational Software (AES), a South Carolina company that creates special software programs for children with autism and other special needs. Karl had been searching everywhere for software that incorporated teaching methods that were used for children with autism. When he was unable to find suitable programs, he decided that he would simply create the programs himself.

Autism Dad’s Groups

As awareness about autism has grown, there are more and more support groups for families who have a child with autism. These groups are a great place for families to talk about issues and share information.

One group was started by a Chicago area couple who had a son with autism. Called “The Answer, Inc.”, the group was intended to help parents like themselves. Deborah Vines, who started The Answer, Inc. worked with her husband James Harlan to help the group grow.

James and Deborah have a son, Jason, who is now 20 years old and happens to have autism. What has grown out of that situation is a gift.

Fragile X Syndrome

A scientist named Mark Bear who directs the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT considers himself a regular basic scientist. He diligently goes about his research day after day trying to unravel the causes of autism. As a result of relentless research, scientists sometimes discover amazing facts that can help a lot of people. Mark Bear is such a scientist and he has made such a discovery regarding autism.

He discovered a system in the brain called Fragile X syndrome, which is a genetic disorder that most people with autism have. Fragile X Syndrome is a mutation of the X chromosome in the brain that can cause mental retardation and autism. That is only one part of the discovery.

International Autism Forum

Carnegie Mellon International Forum on Autism

It was not too long ago that it seemed impossible to get information about autism without having to search far and wide and talk to an awful lot of people. There were many more questions than answers, and there were no actual experts or specialists dealing with autism.

Though there are still many questions regarding autism, there are answers, too. There are also doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of autism and there are researchers around the world trying to find more information regarding autism on a daily basis.

Boy with Autism Rescued with Father

The newspapers are plastered with the photos and stories of a father and son who were miraculously rescued from a harrowing experience.

Father and son were in the water in Florida when Chris Marino, age 12, got pulled out into choppy waters by strong currents. When his father Walter realized what had happened, he dove into the water and tried to get to Chris.

Walter reached Chris, but the water was so rough that it was impossible for them to swim back to shore, so they clung to each other for hours. The hours continued until it got dark and somehow the father and son were separated.
